Happy 40th Birthday TKC

Church Planting, Kenya, Newfrontiers, News, Terry Virgo
Terry Virgo's first church plant On August 21st 1977 sixty-five of us met in the Bar Lounge of Clair Hall, Haywards Heath, at the launch meeting of the Mid Sussex Christian Fellowship, the first church that Terry Virgo planted. House groups had been meeting in five locations around Sussex for the previous few years. These started in Janita’s and my home in Scaynes Hill in May 1973 (photo). Others soon followed in David and Margaret Coak’s home in Balcombe, John and Joan Salmon’s in Uckfield, Ken and Audrey Dalgleish’s in Burgess Hill and Phil and Agnes Ball’s in Henfield. (Sadly John died recently, Joan having died several years ago.) So, in a few days the re-named Kings Church (Mid-Sussex) – there have been several other names en route - celebrates its 40th birthday.…

Around the Newfrontiers apostolic spheres – Relational Mission

Edward Buria, Kenya, Mike Betts, Newfrontiers, News, Relational Mission
From time to time I have published interviews with the various men leading the new apostolic spheres following the transition of the Newfrontiers family of churches in 2011 from one to multiple spheres. Here I talk with Mike Betts who leads the sphere ‘Relational Mission’. We were able to have a discussion about what his vision is and how the sphere has developed since the transition. Relational Mission – meaning and outworking Having given insight to the name ‘Relational Mission’ Mike shares some of the ways in which his vision and values are being outworked: a Leadership Conference, Clustering churches for local fellowship, Church Planting, Leadership Training and ‘extraordinary’ Prayer. Book Many of the values and practices of Newfrontiers have been updated and redefined in the book ‘Relational Mission – A Way…

Pathways from Poverty

Africa, Kenya, News, Poor, Poverty Reduction, Relational Mission
Relational Mission Relational Mission is the sphere of churches within the Newfrontiers family led by Mike Betts. It carries Prayer, Mission and God's heart for the poor in its DNA. In this short interview Julia Miller shares on some of these aspects of Mike's sphere of ministry. Prayer Through an exciting initiative, Enough, churches across this international sphere join together through the worldwide web to pray, thus mobilising thousands of people in effectual prayer. It is a very interesting model that others might wish to copy. Mission Everyone a witness is an attempt to help churches engage evangelistically in their local communities in Word, Works and Wonders. God's heart for the Poor Pathways from Poverty is an expression of God's heart for the poor which seeks to help local churches engage with those…

Kenya’s on-going challenges

Kenya, News, Poor, Relief and Development
Following the recent massacre in Garissa I was in touch with Edward Buria, based in Meru, who leads an apostolic sphere within the Newfrontiers family. Knowing how, with the growth of Newfrontiers, some find it hard to keep in touch with what is going on in other apostolic spheres I thought you might like to read extracts of his response. I plan to give news from some other spheres in the coming weeks; I am privileged to be involved in several and can bring reports from a personal perspective. Edward writes: Terror attack "We are a Nation in mourning once again after the 147 deaths of very precious young & promising Kenyans at the hands of terrorists. Like all other times, even in this grief we remain united as a…

Drought of death in Turkana

Kenya, News, Poor, Relief and Development
Not yet halfway through the drought... A few weeks ago I publicised the drought that was being experienced in Turkana, North Kenya, together with the impact Edward Buria and the Newfrontiers churches were making to help in alleviating the situation. I have just received this update. The situation continues to be very serious. No rain is expected until October, at the earliest, so on-going help is needed for at least another 6 months. The fund is still open. If you wish to make a donation contact  paul.wright@tkc.org.uk of the Kings Church, Mid-Sussex who is coordinating the appeal. Edward's Report 'Drought of death in Turkana' is the only way I can describe the on-going and prolonged drought in Turkana that set in a famine not witnessed in the last 70 years.…

Drought in Turkana, Northern Kenya – Your help is needed

Kenya, News, Poor, Relief and Development
On March 7th BBC News reported ‘The Turkana region in northern Kenya is facing one of the worst droughts in living memory with more than 1m people in need of food aid'. The situation is very serious. Edward Buria, who oversees the Newfrontiers churches in Kenya, agrees. He has launched an appeal for a further £80,000 to continue heloping the population in the communities in which he is working. This will provide bottled water and highly nutritious food, including special Unimix for the very young. Edward has recorded a message while standing in front of some manayattas, the living accommodation of the Turkana people. In it he refers to an earlier initiative where the Newfrontiers churches provided fishing boats to help people fish in Lake Turkana and thus help themselves…
