Empowered and buzzing – Jubilee+ conference report

Jubilee+, News, Poor
The annual Jubilee+ conference is one of the first dates in my diary each year. It combines helpful impartation of knowledge with worship, vision, networking and a time of prayer. This year’s conference in Cambridge lived up to my expectations. During the week running up to the conference, one of Natalie Williams’ friends at King's Church in Hastings had said to her that she felt that Jubilee+ has been like a deep-sea oil rig, pushing deeper and deeper, sometimes through rocks that were hard to budge, but that this year's conference would be as if we had finally struck oil. (Natalie is one of the core team of Jubilee+.) That accurately reflected the day. During the conference, delegates were coming out of main sessions and seminars saying how profound they…

Jubilee Plus and an interview with Martin Charlesworth

Jubilee+, Newfrontiers, Poor
How did it start? Several years ago Martin was invited to set up an initiative to help UK-based churches to engage more effectively with those who are poor or in need in their local communities. Adopting the vision statement - To see the Church in the UK be a champion of the poor and a means to healthy communities across the nation - Martin and a core team have worked tirelessly to develop strategies for Social Action, Social Justice and Social Enterprise. In many ways they have ‘punched well above their weight’; they have developed a network across many streams and denominations, have entry into places touching national strategy for the poor, and have served many churches directly or indirectly in helping raise the excellence of their ministries. Communication This…

Churches that Change Communities

Jubilee+, News, Poor
It was so stimulating to gather with over 250 passionate and like-minded people for the annual Jubilee+ conference! The opportunity to learn about how to be more effective in ministry with those who are poor and disadvantaged, to receive fresh vision, to network with others and to pray together, was an event I was determined not to miss. And my expectations were not disappointed. Jubilee+ Jubilee+ is an initiative that began within the Newfrontiers family of churches several years ago with a vision ‘To increase social inclusion and the relief of poverty through churches engaging with social action, social justice and social enterprise’. This is achieved through ‘equipping churches of all denominations to engage more effectively with our communities and, particularly, to help them increase their capacity to serve the…

News Jottings – June 2015. Ebola update, Pacific Rim update, Jubilee+ Conference

Ebola, Health, International, Jubilee+, News, Pacific Rim, Poor
Another interruption to my ‘Mobilising volunteers’ series, but various things have come to my attention recently that I think will be of wider interest. Ebola Update There was a very positive response to the appeal in recent months to help people in Liberia, Sierra Leona, Guinea and Nigeria through our churches. John Hammond, who worked hard to coordinate the appeal, has produced an excellent update. If you wish to have a copy please contact me or John. Pacific Rim Newsletter In recent weeks I have published brief reports from various Newfrontiers apostolic spheres. This Newsletter came to me recently from The Pacific Rim, led by Peter Brooks, and gives some encouraging reports from Australia, New Zealand and Cambodia. Jubilee+ Two weeks ago I had the enjoyable privilege of meeting with a…

To help you engage with real issues…

Books, Jubilee+, News, Poor
Here are two resources I strongly recommend - a book (The Myth of the Undeserving Poor) and a conference. Both come from the Jubilee+ initiative of Newfrontiers in the UK which helps individuals and churches engage with the needs of those who are poor or disadvantaged. First I will tell you about the conference. Faith + Justice Conference. Milton Keynes, UK. Saturday February 7th 2015   What is your real attitude to politics? Do you find them a turn-off? In the UK, Christians tend to be more likely to vote in elections or even be members of political parties than the average member of the public. However, many Christians would say they don’t ‘get’ politics, don't care about them, or simply don’t understand the difference between the political parties. They may hold strong views on education…
